Constitutive Concealment
Constitutive Concealment is about academic peer review, where concealment has come to be regarded as crucial for the unbiased evaluation of academic publishing and proposals for research funding. The project will scrutinize policy documents, guidelines and directives, scholarly controversies, and media debates concerning double-blind peer-reviewers for publications and grant applications between 2000-2025. Interviews will be conducted with the editors of leading journals and higher-level research council administrators in Europe and the UK. The study will map the steps involved in achieving the effacement of the peer reviewer, and dissect the complicated relationship between two aspects of discretion: autonomy and anonymity.
