Stealth Artists

Maria Karlsson & Måns Wrange

Stealth Artists investigates contemporary artists who deliberately conceal their identities—either to mitigate the risk of various forms of retaliation or for other strategic, conceptual, or personal reasons. The project examines how different modes of anonymity are anchored in, and affect, the artists’ art practices as well as their everyday lives. It also explores how anonymity is perceived and negotiated within the art world and media landscape. The study draws on interviews with a selection of artists and representatives of the art world, in combination with analyses of artworks and media materials such as art criticism, news coverage, and public discourse.
