OUTOFSIGHT

exploring social (im)perceptibility

(Out)smarting Imperceptibility

Ana Chiritoiu

This project is about a social group that responds to being rendered imperceptible by controlling and sometimes embracing their imperceptibility. The Romanian Roma group with whom the researcher works regard imperceptibility as a central component of their identity, which they proudly center on what they describe as their “talent” to “outsmart” others. The project will explore how imperceptibility and “outsmarting” are thought about, fostered, judged, mitigated, and choreographed across social life, and how this can help us rethink social imperceptibility not only as a scourge but also as a resource.
